Languages, Literacy and Communication

We love reading!

This term we have been learning about authors. The children have heard about what an author does. They have had lots of opportunities to look at books, read stories together and look at the lovely pictures we have in our story books.

We were very lucky to have a visit from Helen Docherty, an author who lives in Swansea. She read us lots of stories and we met her friend, the Blue Baboon!

We even have some of her books in nursery to look at......and a 'real' Blue Baboon!

We love reading!!

Authors visit - Helen Docherty

As you will now know, we have sent home storybooks with the children. Story time is such a valuable activity for you to enjoy with your child. It provides a chance to talk, to help your child develop skills in oracy, communication, imagination, building relationships and listening. These skills form the foundation for every other skill that your child will learn so enjoy these special moments with your child. The expectation is for enjoyment, not 'learning to read'. Talk about the pictures, ask questions and try to link things in the pictures to home and family, giving your child opportunity to chat. Please return the story books on a MONDAY and we will change the books with the children, ready to send home again. So cuddle up, share the book and know that you are giving your child the best tools for learning. ENJOY!

Jolly Phonics - These are the songs we use in nursery to help us learn about the sounds that letters make

Phonics is a foundation for reading and writing. The Jolly Phonics rhymes teaches the letter sounds in an enjoyable, multisensory way and enables children to read and write words when they feel confident and ready. The use of phonics is an important strategy for reading, writing, and spelling which is taught in nursery. The children really enjoy the songs and the actions. This resource ties into our multi-faceted approach to learning and recognising sounds, incorporating songs and rhymes, mark-making, and physical, concrete activities to give your child the best start in reading and writing in a fun, easy way!

Look out for our 'Sound of the Week' later in the year!
